Low-cost Oud: something that's worth it?

Posted on November 30, 2013 by niten

A partially Off-Topic post, since it is not about vintage perfumes, but in this Christmas atmosphere could be useful.
How is Oud fashionable in these days ? A lot, and perhaps too much...

"Oud" is, in very simple words, (and I will attract the wrath of the experts), a kind of oil extracted from an Asian tree, and its aroma could be compared to something halfway incense and
resin. The real Oud is very rare and very expensive, while the synthetic Oud, produced in chemiucal laboratories, it's cheaper and is used in many perfumes today.
Oud is often presented as exclusive and used in "niche perfumery" ("niche" is a word that can mean a lot, but can mean nothing at the same time...) . Since it's very fashionable, many Perfume Houses produced their own version. About Oud perfumes you can find a vast amount ol examples and literature on the web. Here I would like to point out two unusual Oud perfumes.
Why "unusual"? Yes, unusual for two reasons: price is very cheap, and quality is good. These are two factors rarely found together, and when it happens, it deserves to be reported.

The first perfume is "Animal Oud " by Atkinsons, an Oud that turns on the sweet side, and it is pleasing for the female audience. Experts will smile (or will be horrified ) seeing the Montale-like bottle.

The second one is "Oud pour Lui" is Alyssa Ashley (a female version exists but it's not so remarkable), a very concentrated Eau de Parfum, with hours and hours of longevity, and with a really excellent rendering of "walking in the woods on a mountain path".

The prices of both are so low that they do not present a problem for the pockets of virtually anyone: the quality and attractiveness are high, and the value-for-money ratio is excellent.
I strongly suggest you to try both (see pictures).
