Reformulations since 2008-2009 were one of the most hot and.discussed topics, and you can find dozens of articles over the Net about it. All contributors, however, agree on a fact: Opium is no longer the same scent than before, opulent, rich and magnificent, a real symbol of a Golden Era.
The aspect we want to explore, however, is an alleged "Year 2013 Reformulation" that - according to some people- made Opium coming back to its ancient days and former glory. True or false?
Let's go and verify it, with the usual "blind-test" using 11 different bottles, some of which generously provided by friends and friends very willing to such an experiment.
We have for testing (SEE PICTURES):

- EDT year 1996 ("YSL Sanofi Beaute" label)
- EDT year 1998 ("YSL Sanofi Beaute" label)
- EDT year 2007 ("YSL Parfums" label or "Gucci Era")
- Eau de Parfum year 2009 ( since here : L'Oreal Era )
- EDT year 2010
- EDT year 2011
- EDT year 2012
- 2 different EDT year 2013,
- Eau de Parfum year 2013

RESULTS
Old batches from Nineties smell in a undescribable way. Both year 1992 (batch 2321) and year 1996 (batch 6274) are very similar and there is no significant difference between these two. The scent is the "good old" Opium, with no compromise, in all its glory with its highly-celebrated drydown. Probably bottles from Eighties were even better, but there were no one available at the moment.
Batch from year 1998 appears to only slightly -but very slightly- weaker than previous ones. No complaint however.
The year 2007 sample appears to be not at the same level of the three previous, it's significantly weaker, but still retains some of the Opium acclaimed qualities.
Then, there is a progressive fall into the abyss. There is a progressive weakening in 2009 and 2010, in all components and all notes (top-, middle- and basenotes).
Interestingly enough, Eau de Parfums do NOT seem much stronger or more intense than the EdT: during these years EdT and EdP appear almost equivalent.
But the worst cases are the year 2011 and 2012 samples Both smell only as a pale, very pale imitation of the original Opium and lack completely any depth and strenght.
What about the so-much-hyped year 2013?
Well, there are some improvents, but....
Year 2013 batches smell better than previous ones (2011 and 2012), for some aspects even better than 2009 and 2010, but actually are not at the same level of the "year 2007".
Top and middle notes are improved and are almost on the same level of the year 2007 sample, but the drydown (the most important thing in this type of perfume) it's still disappointing. Drydown lacks depth and strenght.
Oddly again, the Eau de Parfum doesn't seem much different -or at least stronger- than EdT.
CONCLUSION
Briefly: year 2013 Opium show improvements over year 2011 and 2012 (both years are really disappointing for any real Opium lover), but it not reaches the same level of famed, highly-celebrated old Opium.
If you want the classic old, classic Opium experience, you should still seek for vintage bottles.
If you want only a light version -but sensibly better than the last ones- well, 2013 batches probably will satisfy you.
In any case, don't "blind-buy" Opium without having tested it before. Try yourself and get conclusions according your nose.

OPIUM di Yves Saint Laurent:
Croce e Delizia, Tormento ed Estasi, di ogni appassionato.
Opium: un profumo che non ha bisogno di presentazioni. La storia delle progressive riformulazioni di questo capolavoro, a partire dal 2008-2009 è stato uno degli argomenti più infuocati e discussi. e sulla Rete si possono trovare articoli e scambi di opinione a volontà. Su un fatto tutti sono concordi: Opium non è più lo stesso profumo di una volta, opulento e magnifico, simbolo di un'era.
L'aspetto sul quale però si vuol prestare attenzione in questa sede è la presunta riformulazione del 2013 secondo la quale -sembra- si sia ritornati agli antichi fasti. Vero o falso?
Andiamo a verificare, con il consueto test "in cieco", grazie alla disponibilità di ben 11 differenti flaconi, alcuni dei quali generosamente prestati da amici e amiche ben disposte a questo esperimento.

RISULTATI
I flaconi datati 1992 e 1996 sono realmente al di là di ogni descrizione. Tenendo conto che nel 1992 probabilmente era già avvenuta una riformulazione (e nel 1996 almeno due), i due campioni sembrano simili tra loro e mostrano in maniera magnifica tutta la ricchezza e l'opulenza che hanno fatto di Opium il celebre profumo che è stato. Ciò è vero sopratutto nel drydown, davvero inarrivabile.
Sullo stesso livello si colloca il sample del 1998, forse appena -ma pochissimo- un filo più leggero dei precedenti. Niente da rimproverare nella sostanza.
Il campione datato 2007 seppur ormai diverso dai precedenti, e in versione ormai "alleggerita", è l'ultimo a mostrare tutte le qualità di questo profumo, nella maggior parte delle sue sfumature.
Successivamente comincia una discesa inarrestabile: i campioni 2009 e 2010 sembrano semplicemente "annacquati" rispetto ai precedenti, quel che è peggio è che non sembra esserci nella Eau de Parfum una particolare maggior forza o intensità rispetto alla EdT.
Mentre i campioni del 2011 e 2012 sono -se possibile- il punto più basso, dal momento che sembrano, più che Opium stesso, la sua pallida imitazione. Persino i campioni 2009-2010 sembrano superiori a quelli del 2011-2012.
E per il 2013?
A ossere onesti, qualche miglioramento nel 2013 c'è stato: le note di testa e quelle medie ritornano al livello del 2007, quindi al livello di Opium "vecchia maniera" (anche se assolutamente non ai livelli degli anni Novanta, sia ben chiaro): ma quello che purtroppo è deludente è il drydown, ovvero le note di fondo, che -in teoria- sono le più importanti per questo tipo di profumo. Il drydown annata 2013 è purtroppo non all'altezza, assai inconsistente.
Opium "annata 2013" appare, in sintesi, come un profumo riuscito a metà: le note iniziali e centrali sono sufficientemente intense per non fare rimpiangere la versione del Duemila, mentre le note di fondo, purtroppo, lasciano a desiderare. Questo vale sia per la EdT che per la versione EdP. Ancora una volta l'EdP non mostra particolari differenze rispetto all'EdT.
Vale la pena l'acquisto? Come al solito, quando si tratta di un profumo del genere, e quando c'è di mezzo il ricordo del "vintage", è bene provare di persona ed evitare acquisti "al buio".
In ogni caso, è bene sapere che se siete rimasti con la mente alla immortale versione di Opium dei tempi andati, difficilmente rimarrete soddisfatti.
Se invece preferivate la versione parzialmente "alleggerita" del Duemila e siete disposti a chiudere un occhio sulla (mancata) potenza delle note di fondo, l'annata 2013 potrebbe anche lasciarvi soddisfatti.
Di questi tempi, potrebbe essere già una soddisfazione sapere che la risalita è cominciata. Sempre sperando che di risalita si tratti.
